Joseph Morton testimony

Joseph Morton was born in Lodz Poland. His family all lived in the same room but it was decent size with several beds, some were shared. When he heard about the Hitler’s rise to power it started with hearing from his parents of the harm that was done to the Jew’s. He also had an aunt that had a sister who lived in Berlin who were kicked out of Germany and were forced to come back to Lodz Poland. She wanted to go back and she did but she was sent back to Poland. They were able to live in their same apartment. There wasn’t any specified jobs in the ghettos. He heard that they were taking children from the hospital and throwing them out of the windows and into a truck. He was separated from his mother and some cousins. A US soldier liberated him but he was so sick he could hardly register it. Some consequences he would suffer would be that he would have to live on without his mother and he would never want to go back to his hometown. He later moved to Canada with his brother. Later they moved to the United States and met up with his father there. When they moved to Canada the Jewish federation fed them and helped to support them while they were there and tried to get used to it. They also taught him to be a cutter in the sewing industry where now he cuts hair. They only stayed in Canada for about a year and continued to live in Chicago with his father. His cousin went back to Poland to live.

“They would go as far as the Jewish area and stopped right there. If they went any further in they would get punished.”

“Being in the ghetto the starvation was very tremendous.”
